That’s what I said when I headed out, reservation waiting.
I can still say it.
I will return home Tuesday, maybe. I will still be able to say it.
Why? First picture.
Because of a heavy work day I got a late start … the sun was beginning to set as I came across the Kaibab reservation. It looked like a thunderhead, until I noticed it was streaming from a source … then I could see the long, long line of bright orange blaze. I traveled along beside it for awhile… When I reached Fredonia I turned on to the 89A… well, I tried to turn there, but that’s where the sheriff stopped me. Ended up spending the night in Fredonia. I’m pretty sure I met everyone but the mayor. I might have met the mayor. It was an interesting adventure. I got lots of advice about where I might go instead of North Rim. I even took some of it.
So in the morning we moseyed along, stopped at every historical marker or random side road that looked intriguing. Scampered the dogs a few times. The best one was the Toadstool Trail. Perfect length for them, just about a mile in. You can go further but you get to the “main attraction” in about a mile. We – all three of us – loved that trail! Lucky waited in the car. It was early, cool out and i cracked the windows. He was snoozing comfortably when we got back.
Then we explored a few campgrounds and marinas along Lake Powell. Stopped to oggle the dam. Had some interesting gas station adventures (one of which is pictured, but it wasn’t even the best one.) Finally, sick of driving I stopped randomly here in blanding. On to Moab and Arches in the morning I guess. I’ll stay at least one night. Maybe two. Maybe forever.
One thing that is very different – when I was at Bryce over Memorial Day weekend nobody was taking any precautions, no masks, no rules. This time, the news is all about the record-breaking numbers and the hospitals at capacity. Had trouble finding a campground that would open their bathrooms so I could shower! Everyone is wearing a mask… and they were getting very serious in the Navajo Nation, see the signs.
